Profile Summary:
Kashef Chowdhury, the son of a reputed civil engineer, graduated in architecture from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1995. After working with architect Uttam Kumar Saha, he established the practice URBANA in partnership in 1995 and from 2004 has continued as the sole Principal of the firm. In 2006, he attended the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass in Sydney.
Chowdhury has a studio-based practice with strong emphasis on climate, materials and context - both natural and human. Projects in the studio are given extended time for research so as to reach a level of innovation and original expression. Works range from conversion of ship and low cost raised settlements in 'chars' to training centre, mosque, art gallery, museum, factory buildings, residences and multi-family housing to corporate head offices.
Kashef Chowdhury won first prize in AR+D Architecture Award 2012 from the Architectural Review, London. He received the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture 2016 and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) International Prize in 2021.
Chowdhury has been a visiting faculty at the North South University and BRAC University, and has been a juror in crits in universities around the world.
Seven books focusing on his work has so far been published by Swiss publishers Park Books, Quart Verlag and Scheidegger & Spiess.

3rd ICGrA, 2025 is going to be jointly organized by Green Architecture Cell (GrACe), Department of Architecture (DoA), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Department of Architecture (DoA), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET). The conference is lead by GrACe, DoA, BUET and hosted by DoA, CUET in collaboration with the Environment and Energy Division (EED), DoA, BUET; and the Environmental Lab, DoA, CUET.
